Collection: SHERYL ST. GERMAIN

Born and raised in New Orleans, I grew up bathed in color and jazz. I spent much of my life as a poet and lyric essayist weaving the colors and rhythms I was nurtured with into words. When I retired from directing an MFA program in creative writing, I took up quilting. I soon moved from traditional quilting to making art quilts, experimenting with improvisational piecing, dyeing my own fabric, and surface design, which feels like the jazz I love embedded into cloth. I began a journey of making fiber art that might act in concert with my writing.

 I’m drawn to that which is broken and stitched. A life in a community of recovery has led me to see the force and beauty of the wounded who have survived. The stitched line like a scar. Striving to make music in cloth or words out of that which is broken.

A love of the jazz of improvisation, the building of layers of meaning through shapes and sound and color. Abstraction a kind of breaking and reassembling that is a more seductive entrance into a question or feeling.
