A Kick Start for Your Art - by Patrick Rodgers

From another dimension

The Kobo Gallery is launching a new series of group shows highlighting the range of talents residing within its Barnard Street location. The first show opens on Thursday, August 19, with a multi-dimensional extravaganza featuring three of the co-op gallery's members.

"2-D, 2 ½-D, 3-D" features an eclectic, albeit complimentary, selection of work from Amanda Hanlon, Caroll Williams and Dicky Stone, each of whom has a unique form of local inspiration.

Hanlon, a painter and print maker, had her interest piqued by the ornate cast ironwork of Savannah, and since moving here has set out cataloging designs from around the Historic District. She fuses these elements with more organic shapes to create stylish prints.

Representing the third dimension is wood worker Dicky Stone, who creates unique interpretations of local flora. He begins by turning pieces on the lathe, and then carving in details and adding some polish. The results are gorgeous decorative works that pay homage to the simple beauty of marsh grasses.

"My work is somewhere in between," says Caroll Williams, who is pioneering the second and a half dimension with her assemblages.

Williams transformed a background in graphic design and a penchant for collecting old boards that she finds washed up on the beach into pieces that hang on the wall, but have more depth than the average picture."

Southern Living - June 2010

"Best Wedding Party Gifts: Kobo Gallery and Shop SCAD, two Savannah Stores, stand out for artsy, one-of-a-kind gifts for attendants (and for the rest of us who shop there, too). Both sell unique jewels and accessories and customize many of their gift items. For the groom and groomsmen think silver cuff links by local artist Meredith Anne Sutton; for brides and bridesmaids, consider Jennifer Lee Hallsey's charming jewelry." - Lisa Mowry

South Magazine - February 2010

"Bright with crafts and fine art, this artist co-op gallery offers a variety of mingling textures. Fiber arts are on display alongside woodturning, jewelry, paintings and photography. Tobia Makover's haunting, faceless portraiture is on view alongside Caroll Williams' collage and assemblage pieces. There is a wide array of styles and perspectives assembled by 14 different artists."

All You Need Is Love

Photographer Tobia Makover believes that art serves as the ultimate Valentine's Day present. "Art is so intimate," she enthused. "It's a very personal and romantic gift." Makover is one of the 14 area artists featured in "Endless Love," a group exhibit on display at Kobo Gallery through Sunday. The exhibit includes work in a wide range of media, from miniature landscape paintings to Sonya Ho to large-format color photography by Imke Lass.

This Valentine's Day themed show doesn't offer the typical red-hearts-and white-lace Hallmark greeting card-style art that is often associated with the holiday. Instead, "Endless Love" showcases affordable original work by local artists and artisans that serves as an ideal way to express affection and appreciation on Valentine's Day.

"Our show theme, 'Endless Love,' is a fun take on the Valentine holiday," said jewelry designer Heather Lindsey Stewart, co-founder of Kobo Gallery. "Our artists are offering special sale prices just for the show, which I think will make our show appealing to the public."

Highlights at this popular artists' co-op near Ellis Square include a new bronze sculpture by woodturner Dicky Stone, original jewelry by Heather Lindsey Stewart and Meredith Anne Sutton, experimental photography by Tobia Makover and imaginative painting by Scott Griffin.

"Art is such a timeless gift," said Stewart. "It is so unique from all of the mainstream gifts. Plus, it will leave a longer impression than chocolate or flowers this Valentine's Day."

South Magazine - December 2009

"Recently doubled in size, this Savannah artist co-operative now includes eight new artists, including fiber artist Doris Greider, photographer Liza Crowley Judson, woodturner Steve Cook and painter Anna Fox Ryan. Through January 1, this multimedia exhibit will showcase the diversity of Savannah's local artists."

South Magazine - April 2007

"Kobo Gallery is an artists' cooperative featuring the work of some of Savannah's most unorthodox up-and-coming artists, including jewelry by Heather Lindsey Stewart, Christi Reiterman, and Kristi Jilson, photography by Rachel Ormiston and woodwork by Dicky Stone.

The brainchild of Stewart, Kobo evolved from her own jewelry store, which was located in the current Kobo space for the past three years. The decision to include a varied group of artists has yielded a co-op that is both unique and supportive of all genres, and has the potential to become one of Savannah's best galleries...."
