Artist Statement Whether working from imagination or life, I model the clay until I feel it has an essence, a kind of spirit, and then I try to refine the piece without losing it. My uppermost intent in casting my pieces into bronze is to hold on to that essence. I make very small editions of no more than 12. Some pieces I fire and patina and perhaps add cloth or ribbon or wire. |

Mary Adams began her study of art in Paris in 1972. Returning home to Savannah in the mid ‘70s she studied oil painting with noted artist, Augusta Oelschig. Moving to New York in 1981, she studied drawing and painting at The Art Student’s League for three and a half years. She is a life member there. Also during that time she was involved in several off Broadway theatre projects.
During the ‘80s, she had three showings in New York and six in the Savannah area. In 1983 she illustrated a book published by William Morrow & Co. In Savannah, she published limited edition prints of the original Polk’s Market and the old public dock on the Back River at Tybee.
In the ‘90s, Ms Adams co-founded Painter Ridge Publishers in Washington, CT., which published cards, personalized writing papers and photographic art books. During that time she chiefly painted by commission and began her study of figurative sculpture. She has studied with noted sculptor, Paul Lucchesi here and in Fabiano, Italy. She has also worked with noted sculptor Garland Weeks. Three recent trips to the south of France have inspired explorations into printmaking. She has shown her work in various shows in Litchfield County, CT. and was for several years a featured artist at the elegant Mayflower Inn in Washington, CT.
In 2005, Ms. Adams had a one person showing at Iocovozzi Fine Art which included watercolor, oils, monoprints and sculpture. This was the most successful show at this gallery up until that time.
In 2008 and 2009 she exhibited her work at An Evening of Sculpture held at the Green-Meldrim House. This is an invitational exhibition which includes a dozen noted sculptors from around the country, organized by Susie Chisholm. It too was highly successful.
Ms. Adams has work in Auckland, New Zealand, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., New York and in many local collections. She divides her time between Savannah, Tybee and Washington, CT.
Since 2006, she has co-published a magazine called Edible Nutmeg.
